Default
master page of an SharePoint 2013 site is seattle.master
In order to apply your custom theme to your SharePoint Site you need to either
change the css of the default master page(Which
is not at all recommended), Or you can download a copy of your SharePoint
master page and make changes to it.
You can
change the master page tags as well as css using either Visual studio or
SharePoint designer as an editor.
Let’s start
with getting a local copy of SharePoint Master Page & its theme.
1. Open your SharePoint Site. > Go to
Site Settings > Master Pages. (This will take you to master page catalog’s
library, you can download a copy of master page from there).
2. Now let’s get the css. Open the below
link where you will find the default css of Seattle master page.
http://Your Site url/_layouts/15/1033/styles/Them able/corev15.css
Get the css classes to your local machine.
3. Now we just need to rename the master
page and css files.
4. Find the <link> tag that embeds
corev15.css, copy the entire tag and paste it after the <link> tag of
corev15.css.
5. Now just replace corev15’s path of
this tag with the path where your custom css is placed. And also add after=”corec15.css” attribute to this
copy.
That’s it
now you just need to find different classes & ids that are needed to be
overridden in order to change the look of your SharePoint site.
Points to be taken care of:
1. Never remove any SharePoint default
control while you are branding your site. That may lead you to other errors. (Set
Display of control to none instead of deleting it).
2. You can move SharePoint controls but
never rename them.
3. In case if you want to add any
control to it see it that they are added in SharePoint’s default tags only.
4. Always place your <link> and <script>
tags after SharePoint default <link> & <script> tags only.
You can
implement your Master Page in many ways.
1. If you are using designer the your master
page will be directly available to your master page catalogs library (only if
you have opened SharePoint site in designer and trying to brand from there).
You need to publish Master Page as a major Version and change default master
page from below link
http://Your site Url/_layouts/15/ChangeSiteMasterPage.aspx
2. You can create a module of your Master
Page and create a feature containing code to a change the default master page
on feature activation.
3. You can manually upload files to
Master Page catalog. Publish Master Page as a major version.
Open below link and just select your master page from both dropdowns and
just click ok. That’s it your SharePoint site is with new theme now.
