Creating site collections on specific content database

Sometimes there are situations where we need to create site collections with a specific content database. You could achieve this using the below steps.

  1.  Create / User existing web application in which you want to create site collections.
  2. Go to Central Admin > click Application Management > click Manage Content Databases

Select your desired web application (the one in which you want to add site collections).

You can see below screen now,

Note: You will be able to see a database name that is the database with which your web application is associated. In case you create a new Site collection in this web application then by default the visible database will be used.

   3. Click Add new Content Database, below screen appears

 4.       Add new database name and click OK, in my case I am creating 2 such databases  KP1 and KP2.

5.       Once you are done you can see the created databases as below.

That’s it you now have two databases in order to create site collection to specific database. At present all the 3 databases are having Status to start. There are two ways to create site collection to a specific database will see both.

First Way: Set all unwanted Databases offline.
Let’s first create Site Collection in KP1 database.
  1.  First of all click on database kp2 and set its status to offline. Below figure will guide you.
Perform same operation for all databases except KP1. This will result into below screen.

2.   Now when all the other databases except KP1 are stopped, when you create a site collection it will be associated with KP1.

Second Way: Set Site Collection max capacity.

Now let’s create a new site collection in KP2 database. It is recommended that always set Total number of site collections less than the maximum number of site collections.

1.    Set Maximum capacity of site collection of the database to 1 for all other databases except for KP2.

Below Screen will be resulted,

  2.    Now when you create new site collection it will be using KP2 database as capacity of other database is less.

Other than above two ways, of course you can use Power Shell command. Hope this helped you.

Business Data Connectivity

I came to a requirement wherein I was supposed to get data from an 3 rd party portal using API’s and then bring them to SharePoint server. The first approach that I finalized was just to make BDC solution that will get data from 3 rd party portal and will deploy it to SharePoint. How to Create BDC solution in SharePoint? I found below link that is having really great description about hot to create and deploy the BDC solution to SharePoint. http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/uploadfile/hung123/creating-business-data-connectivity-service-using-visual-studio-2010/ After creating an POC I came to know that BDC model cannot be deployed on Multi tenant farm. So what can be done next? After some amount of googling I came to know that we can create BDC solution using WCF services also. So I created a WCF service solution that acted as a wrapper that used to fetch data from the portal. We can them publish that service to IIS or Server and use the servic...

Identity client runtime library (IDCRL) did not get a response from the login server.

Recently I was doing some testing with a background PowerShell and encountered a weird error. “Identity client runtime library (IDCRL) did not get a response from the login server”. The error that you might encounter while working with PowerShell. This error is very misleading when it comes to identifying what could go wrong. After doing quite a good amount of research below are the probable causes for the error. Invalid Credentials MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) Manage security defaults. Solutions Invalid Credentials Check if your credentials are wrong. Especially if you are using variables. MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) Check if MFA is enabled on the account which you are using. These only affect you badly if you are developing PowerShell for a background Job. Go to Microsoft 365 admin center Users -> Active users -> Select the user -> Manage multifactor authentication -> Select the user -> Disable multi-factor authentication. M...
